VENICE - Jewish Ghetto Tour

Morning or Afternoon - you will be met at the pier by your guide and transferred from the port by private water taxi for your walking tour of Venice.

Our tour begins with the borough of Cannaregio with its Jewish Ghetto, Jewish Museum and three synagogues.  This is the area where the Jewish community was confined as of 1516.  Jewish people actually started arriving in Venice far earlier ) from the Orient and countries beyond the Alps in the early days of Christianty and, after 1492, from Spain and Portugal.

The immigrants settled first in small communities on the mainland.  Then they migrated to Venice, where trade between the Orient and Occident flourished.  Their residence permits were periodically granted and revoked, but gradually, they managed to form a community of considerable size and importance in the city's day-to-day life.

In a city decree on March 29, 1516, the first Jewish Ghetto in Europe was ordered in the square of the parish of Saint Jerome - and called Ghetto Nuovo. Strangely enough, the second zone attributed later in 1541 - in an old foundry - was named Ghetto Vecchio - meaning old ghetto.

Finally, Ghetto Novissimo was the area given in 1633.
